Francois Ozon (Swimming Pool/ 8 Women/ Everything Went Fine) is a masterful director and this film, with a 5 star cast, (Huppert, Danny Boon and Fabrice Luchini to name just 3) displays all his talents ( he also wrote the script) as he offers the French cinema lover a real treat; a homage to 30's Cinema as well one of the most enjoyable and well made French films of recent times.
Set in 1930s Paris, Madeleine, a young, and talentless actress, is accused of murdering a famous producer. Acquitted on the grounds of self-defence at her trial she enjoys a new life of fame and success until another actress appears and claims the crime. Throughout the film the cast, clearly enjoying themselves bring bouyancy and life to the well polished script and it's production values are first rate.
It's Ozon's most popular film in many years and the reasons are obvious. It's a great French comedy, stylish and well paced, an ode to 30's Cinema and it also has an umissable Me Too currency.
"A joyous comedy with the air of vaudeville that flows like a spring from the hand of its cast... and a plot with all the possible ingredients: murders, evictions, lovers, failed actresses, trials, sorority and a dash of Me Too. " El Pais.
" Ozon entertains himself, and us in this classic and current comedy." Cinemania
" A smart and intelligent comedy." Cinematismo
"Several generations of France’s finest thespians are clearly enjoying themselves in this stylish tale of how notoriety — even for presumed murder — need not be the slightest impediment to social and professional rewards." Screen International
