About the Event

One For The Road Film Trailer HERE      (The film trailer doesn't reaaly do the film justice)

Director. Markus Goller  Cast:    Frederick Lau, Nora Tschirner, Burak Yigit, Friederike Becht

M.  115 mins

Sony Pictures Germany put the big bucks into One Of The Road as Frederick Lau is a big name in Germany, the recipient of two German Film Awards for acting and was outsnading again recently in The Captain. Director Markus Golle (see below) is a successful director with many films that have done well at the German Box Office. We screened his film 25KMH a few years back and it was well received here too.

In this one, Lau plays Mark who has a succesful working life and a fairly substantial drinking habit. Many would flag it as a problem, but not Mark.  When he's arrested behind the wheel he has to complete a therapy course to get his license back. No problem!

There he meets Helena (Nora Tschirner) who is a teacher who also drinks too much but for other reasons.  Drinkers love company and together they take off on a self recovery we can beat this road only to detour down the fall back into bad habits bypass. It's only when Mark loses his job, friends start to fall away and  Helena has a serious accident that the bottom is reached.

However lightness and a way out is at hand. One For The Road is a rare film in that it doesn't end where it begins. It ends in a much better place for Mark. His beginning.  Goller doesn't shy away from the bottom of the glass (it's a German film after all) but he has given us a tragi-comedy that is also what many films are not,  memorable.

“Funny, and in many moments also profound.” Kino Zeit

"Deeply touching and distinctively authentic." Beta Cinema

"Frederik Lau, always unrivaled,  fills the role of Mark convincingly." Johannes B.

Offical Selection Munich Film Festival 2023

MARKUS GOLLER  Director:

Markus Goller, born in 1969, started out in the early 1990s as a film editor. Since 1996, the Munich native has also been a director, creating his first feature film, PLANET B: MASK UNDER MASK, in 2001. FRIENDSHIP!, his second feature-length film, was surprisingly popular, attracting 1.6 million moviegoers in 2010. His subsequent films, including EINE GANZ HEIẞE NUMMER (2011), FRAU ELLA (2013), and SIMPEL (2017), were also very successful. His road movie 25 KM/H (2018) was nominated for the German Film Award in the category of best feature film. Goller's latest film, ONE FOR THE ROAD, is a renewed collaboration with Oliver Ziegenbalg, who also wrote the screenplays for 25KM/H and FRIENDSHIP!
